I've been listening to a lot of bootlegs of great and not-so-great bands lately and I started thinking (something that's very dangerous for me to do) about when a lot of these bands became irrelevant.
Here's some of my examples: The Rolling Stones - Goat's Head Soup (The 1st step in the long long long death) Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door (Too much smack... too many keyboards) Little Feat - Lowell George Dies Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment or Stomach Pumping Rumors Madonna - Warren Beatty becomes her bitch AC/DC - The day after Back In Black was released Aerosmith - The moment they decided to try and continue without Brad Whitford and Joe Perry Al Green - Grits Alice Cooper - When people started talking about what a nice & normal guy he was. Soundgarden - When they played the Universal Ampetheater AND a woman in a fur coat told me to "act civilized." Bad Company - No Paul Rodgers No band. Paul Rodgers returns... still dead. You get the idea. I'm interested in your ideas about bands and the point at which they should have got day jobs.

Ironically many of those transitions are when the bands tried to get off drugs!
OK, I'll add some Circle Jerks Wonderful and beyond, I had to include Wonderful as "Making the Bombs" is a classic. Fear Everything after The Record Black Flag everything after Damaged Living Colour after Times up I got to agree with you in LZ Presence is my favorite album by them, but no one evber really listens to that one as it never sees air time. Triumph after Thunder Seven Deep Purple, wwell, after the real break up, before they did the reunion tour in 1985, even after Ian Gillian left, they were still awesome. Yes since they reunited with 90216 or whatever it was. The Grateful Dead with American Beauty, come on guys! Just some that came to mind.......
