Anyone care to share their thoughts on building your own media center or music server? Do you have one that works for you. Perhaps you care to share your magic formula.

The quickest and easiest is to start with Windows Vista Ultimate and then start adding hard drives to a RAID array. Add an XBOX 360 Media Extender and you can stream to anywhere in the house.

I'm now building a server based on Meedio. My machine will boot directly into Meedio and appear to be a bonafide audio component, not a PC being used as a server---yech! It will have wired and wireless access to my network, a dedicated drive for the OS and 1 terabyte of RAID storage. I am designing this with two slot loading DVD burners and a built-in touchpad with a 6.5" LCD on the server. It will handle optical audio in and out as well as coax SPDIF and can be operated with a wireless keyboard and remote control.

Weitrhino,
That sounds awesome. Let us know how it goes when you're finished.

I have a Thecus N5200 Nas box running SlimServer. I have 2 SqueezeBox 3 units and a Transporter. I typically run all these synchronized for whole house sound.
I use a Nokia 770 as a remote control for the music using the web interface or Slimserver as well as using the SB3 and Transporter interface. The NAS box is in the basement so there is no interference either visually or audibly. Love it and my wife can use it with no issues. All my music is encoded in FLAC so there is no loss due to compression. |
