Well, a high end company with some sense. First, what a great review on this new Denon gem. Denon obviously has their head in the right place. Though, HD - DVD (the look and sound of perfect) and Blu - Ray look great, do we all want to once AGAIN change our video libraries!! Again, to competing formats, don`t these companies get it!!
Does VHS vs. BETA ring a bell to anyone? When you have a universal player that can play just about any size disc you can put in its tray, give you outstanding video quality, and surround capability, what else could you ask for!! This is the way to go.............. |

While I agree with you regarding Denon and combo players, even the best up-sampled DVD can't hold a candle to HD disc content. While I don't like a format war and so far I don't feel the contest between HD DVD and Blu-ray can be classified as a war (yet) both camps seem to be a little smarter this time around by offering their product at more reasonable prices. The latest batch of Toshiba players can be had for under $400 and provide a simply stellar picture, couple that with a Netflix membership and you've got the easiest way to enjoy budding formats in a long time. Unlike VHS vs. Beta or even SACD vs. DVD-A. If you consider the used markets that exist for both Blu-ray players and/or HD DVD players you can have both formats for less than the best up-sampling player be it from Denon or elsewhere. But to further agree with you, I do own a Denon 5910 universal player. However, I own multiple HD DVD and Blu-ray players too.
I guess you can chalk it up to the price of doing business in the ever changing world of technology. Andrew |

In terms of video libraries, I'd recomend a HTPC or the like.

Yes, I guess you can chalk it up to that. You see, your position is unique as you have the great and special opportunity to demo these different formats and players. Currently, I`m back at start. Yes, starting form scratch with only my Grado headphones and portable. If I go High Def player, I must change my library, and of course, pick between Blu - Ray or HD - DVD. It seem easier at the outset, to go universal, surround sound processor, amp, 7.1channels, LCD, DLP, etc. headphone amp and phones, then call it a day. I can play my SACD`s and DVD - A`s. And you know where we stand on that now. So..................................
Definitely will not deny the gorgeous picture and sound with High def DVD. Maybe if they start producing more high def concerts, that could sway me. I own GRP live DVDs and other jazz concerts. And I hear you about used gear, but unless I could trust the source, I`d rather go new. I`ve sold audio/video electronics in my past for a while, I guess I`m biased. I know most people do not take care of their gear like you and I do. |
